How we are funded

Unrestricted funding

What makes us distinctive is our unrestricted funding. It enables us to maintain our independence and neutrality. It gives us the freedom to act as a sounding board and thought leader, at the interface between frontline charities and their funders. And it allows us to initiate work in complex or neglected areas. Our work would not be possible without the support of our core funders:

Project funding

Alongside this, we receive specific funding to deliver research, evaluation and learning, including two longer-term pieces of work:

Connecting Health Communities – facilitated support for cross-sector partnerships to address health inequalities. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, and supported by an advisory group with representation from NHS England and Improvement, the National Lottery Community Fund, people with experience of cross-sector partnership working and people who support those facing health inequalities.

Evaluation Roundtable – we are very grateful to CCLA for their long-term sponsorship of our Evaluation Roundtable, which brings together trust and foundation leaders to reflect on and develop their learning practice.

The rest of our funding is a mix of:

  • Commissions from organisations who have approached us directly about a project
  • Tenders where we bid to take on work as part of a competitive process
  • Match funding for work we initiate
