Doing more with less

‘Leading in Uncertainty’ is a programme of online support for charity leaders, facilitated by members of the IVAR team. It was established at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in April 2020. At that time of acute crisis, we sought to provide a ‘safe space’ to pause and reflect for leaders of smaller, frontline charities. Since then, over 750 charity leaders from across the UK have taken part, sharing their experiences and providing mutual support. Drawing on these conversations, we publish briefings to help trusts and foundations better understand the challenges and realities facing charity leaders, as well as share ideas on how funders can enable charities to do their best work.

This latest briefing is based on conversations with 41 charity leaders during March 2025. It describes current experiences of leading, as well as positive thinking and action by charity leaders. It concludes by highlighting the need for empathy, flexibility and urgency in funders’ support.
