We’re hiring: Communications Officer

Written in

Full-time or Part-time / £30,000 / Hybrid role

Location – Home based and London

Hours – 3-5 days per week

Salary: £30,000

Deadline: Monday 27th April, 10am

Twenty-five years since we were founded, IVAR is at an exciting point in its journey, with a growing team, a new strategy, and an upcoming brand and narrative refresh. We’re looking for a new Communications Officer who can help us bring this to life.

About us

At IVAR – the Institute for Voluntary Action Research – we exist for charities, especially the smallest and least heard. We challenge power imbalances in how the voluntary sector is funded: whose voice counts, whose knowledge shapes decisions, and how resources flow. Through research and learning partnerships, we amplify the experiences of under-represented communities. Through our Open & Trusting grant-making community, we upend harmful dynamics and inspire practical change.

About the role

This is a diverse and dynamic role, critical to IVAR’s new strategy, and collaborating with everyone in the organisation.

Key responsibilities include content creation and storytelling, social media and website management, and design and brand stewardship.

Your creativity and attention to detail will help make our research clear, accessible and compelling – ensuring it reaches and inspires the people who can use it. You’ll embed a new visual and narrative style and a new website, exploring new tools and formats to expand our reach and connect more people with IVAR’s mission.

This is a hands-on role within a smart and welcoming team of 13 members of staff, plus associates. You’ll work closely with the Director of Communications, taking strategic direction while also exercising your own judgement and creativity.

About you

We’re looking for someone who will bring creativity, warmth, organisation, ideas and commitment – a proactive communicator who enjoys trying new things, managing the day-to-day essentials, and contributing to a supportive, flexible and collaborative environment.

You’ll bring:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Confidence with digital channels (LinkedIn and WordPress in particular)
  • An aptitude for visual design, with video and audio editing skills a plus.
  • A passion for the voluntary sector, and alignment with our values

In return, you’ll join a smart and welcoming team where you’ll be supported, encouraged to grow your skills, and work with external partners as well as colleagues.

What we offer

  • £30,000 per annum (pro rata for part time)
  • Full or part-time
  • Flexible working options
  • Hybrid working – Thursdays are an expected joint working day in our London office (SE11)
  • 30 days annual leave (pro rata for part time)
  • Pension matched to 5%
  • Personal and professional development opportunities

How to apply

To apply, please send a CV and cover letter (max two sides) to diana@ivar.org.uk by Monday 27th April 2026, 10am.

Interviews will be held in person at our London office on Wednesday 20th May 2026.

In your cover letter, tell us:

  • Why you are applying
  • How you meet the person specification
  • Your availability to start
  • What you would bring to IVAR

We value, welcome and respect all the differences that make us who we are, including age, cultural background, disability and mental health, ethnicity and race, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, and social background.
