Commissioned by:

Sussex Community Foundation

We are currently working on two exciting pieces of work with Sussex Community Foundation. The first is a study to help the funders to better understand:

  • The range of ways grantees are using this multi-year unrestricted funding and the impact this has

  • How funders can track changes over time brought about by unrestricted funding

  • What funders can learn from this programme to inform their strategies

Secondly, we have been engaged to facilitate a Youth Summit to help Sussex Community Foundation better understand the operating environment for youth organisations in Sussex and how they can be supported.

Sussex Youth Summit

Sussex Community Foundation is focusing on youth work as one of its key areas for 2017 and is hosting a Youth Summit facilitated by IVAR. There has never been a golden age of youth work in England. Funding has always been a mix of local authority funding and charitable fundraising. However, since 2010, an estimated £387 million has been cut from youth service spending by local authorities in England.

The objective of the summit is for Sussex Community Foundation to:

  • Better understand the current operating environment for youth work and what is happening locally. What issues, challenges and opportunities are youth work organisations facing?
  • Better understand how work with young people can be sustained
  • Gather input from those working with young people to decide how best to support organisations in the current operating context
  • Understand the role that community philanthropy can play

Unrestricted Funding study
Sussex Community Foundation runs a programme with the Blagrave Trust that has made unrestricted grants to organisations which work with children and young people across Sussex. This is the first time Sussex Community Foundation has made long-term, high value, unrestricted grants.

The brief
Since this is a new way of working IVAR was commissioned to carry out a study to help the funders to better understand:

  • The range of ways grantees are using this multi-year unrestricted funding and the impact this has
  • How funders can track changes over time brought about by unrestricted funding
  • What Sussex Community Foundation and The Blagrave Trust can learn from this programme to inform their strategies

Research design
Interviews with Sussex Community Foundation, Blagrave Trust and four grantee organisations; followed by an event to share and build on findings.
