Background

Our partnership supports Commonweal Housing – a pioneering action learning charity that seeks to challenge social injustice by incubating new, innovative solutions, based around housing – to reflect on progress, challenges, learning and adaptation; and integrate learning from project evaluations into its strategy and operations. In particular, we have been asked to focus on ‘replication’ and the organisation’s aspiration to be an ‘action learning’ organisation. We are also working with them on their 10-year review of the Re-Unite programme, which works to prevent homelessness amongst mothers on their release from prison so they can regain custody of their children and be re-united as a family.

Commonweal provides housing, expertise and resources to a range of pilot projects in areas as diverse as migrant destitution, mothers exiting the criminal justice system and shared housing for under 30s. In the last 10 years Commonweal has provided nearly £10m of housing stock in 9 different London Boroughs to 9 different organisations, housing hundreds of clients, including dozens of children, providing hundreds of thousands of pounds of revenue support and is at the forefront of the development of social investment in housing.

The brief – What is the purpose of the work?

To support Commonweal to reflect on progress, challenges, learning and adaptation; and integrate learning from project evaluations into its strategy and operations. In practice this means taking on a variety of tasks and working with staff and trustees. For example, IVAR has been working with Commonweal on their 10-year review of the Re-Unite programme, which works to prevent homelessness amongst mothers on their release from prison so they can regain custody of their children and be re-united as a family.
