What can we do for you?

How do we start?

Our work begins with a practical problem or challenge; this becomes our research question. As part of trying to answer that question, we draw on earlier research - our own and others - which might help to shed light and provide pointers. By drawing on these other bodies of work, we enlarge the range of ideas available for the problem-solving process.

Who will be working with you?

IVAR’s work is carried out by people who have spent most of their working lives in and around the voluntary sector, as clients, volunteers, paid staff, trustees, teachers and researchers. They understand and care about the distinctiveness of voluntary sector organisations. What will we do?

We act as a critical friend  to individuals and organisations facing challenges of organisation and management. By offering this kind of sounding board, we provide space for reflection and debate; this process helps to produce outcomes which are both meaningful and durable.

Our work generates practical responses to challenges of organisation and management which are owned and understood by the people we work with.

The outcomes of our work provide lessons and evidence which can be used both to inform policy and improve practice far beyond the research setting.
