Social entrepreneurship and social enterprise explored at second Birkbeck/IVAR seminar
The second seminar in the ever popular Birkbeck/IVAR series was rather fittingly held in Mary Ward House on 4th February. Originally financed by a wealthy philanthropist (taking inspiration from the endeavours of Mary Ward) it was a centre of training, care and entertainment for the less fortunate in society. This transition from philanthropy to entrepreneurial endeavour was a central theme to the discussions held at the seminar.
The 30 participants heard from Roger Spear (Open University) and Mike Aiken (IVAR) who provided their perspectives on social entrepreneurship and the ownership and management of community assets. In his presentation Roger Spear reviewed the different conceptual approaches to social entrepreneurship and related them to approaches in social enterprise. Roger also gave a detailed assessment of the findings from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitoring Programme on social entrepreneurship.

Mike Aiken, Head of Research at IVAR, examined emerging evidence from research into the role of asset management and ownership in social enterprise activity. Mike’s presentation drew on an evidence review into community ownership of assets carried out by IVAR for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in December 2008. The presentation stimulated considerable debate, not least Mike’s challenge to the audience to try and judge the extent to which a range of organisations were engaged in the ownership and management of community assets.

The third seminar in the series will be held on 10th March and poses the eternal question ‘does size really matter’?
