IVAR/CGAP Capacity Building Roundtable Report - 19th January 2010

IVAR/CGAP Capacity Building Roundtable Report

The report of the inaugural IVAR/CGAP (Centre for Chaitable Giving and Philanthropy)  Capacity Building roundtable is now available.  At the event held on 12th November 2009, an invited group of funders, researchers and practitioners discussed and debated the future direction of capacity building.

Delegates agreed that the combination of the recession and the forthcoming  general election is likely to lead to serious reductions in the funding available for capacity building.  Whilst some existing providers may experience a loss of funding, the changing environment may also offer opportunities for innovation and experimentation.  New approaches – for example, demand-led models and bespoke approaches – may flourish if they are supported by evidence about ‘impact’.  Alongside this, more attention might be paid to how organisations in need of support might be able to organise that support for themselves (ie. the ‘self build’ approach to capacity building).
